The Pearl Izumi Tour Series will see Britain’s top professional cycling teams battling it out on the streets of Colchester once again this summer as it returns to Colchester for the fourth year running, we also welcome back for the second year some of Britain’s leading female cyclists taking part in the Johnson Health Tech Grand Prix Series. The racing begins at 5.30pm, starting and finishing close to the Town Hall on the main High St.

If the thought and sight of all this cycling tempts you to get involved….You can!

Why not join the Big Colchester Cycle Ride and get the chance to cycle the High St race circuit and cross the finish line before the professionals as part of a large community led ride.

The supervised ride is suitable for all ages and levels of ability, so you can come along and bring your family as well and the best thing about it – it is completely free!  The ride starts at 1pm, and will be approximately 2 miles, with a choice of starting from Tesco (High Woods) or Hythe. You will be led by CTC on a route into town, ending at 4pm on the High Street, under the elite race finish line!

Also, you will get an exclusive opportunity to meet and be photographed with one of the competing teams, so make sure you bring along your camera.

Jane’s Walk 2013

 CTPC Jane's Walk Poster

National walking month kicks off in Colchester with the world famous Jane’s Walks and the sun has even come out to join us!

Jane’s Walk celebrates the ideas and legacy of urbanist Jane Jacobs by getting local people showing off their local area through a series of free led walks. This international event happens every year at the start of May and its back in Colchester for the 3rd year running.

There are many guided walks planned for the Bank Holiday weekend of the 3rd to the 6th of May with plenty of local people getting involved there is something for everyone, CTPC and the University of Essex are even hosting some walks.

Join Kate Dunton with her short lunch time walk around the beautiful campus of the University of Essex and learn of its tales, urban myths and history. The walk starts outside the Lakeside Café at 1pm on the 3rd of May and lasts one hour.

We ourselves are leading two lunch time tours exploring Colchester’s transport history where we rediscover the forgotten tramlines that still lay beneath the surface of our town! The first, starting outside the Town Hall, takes place on the 3rd of May, from 12:15 till 1pm. But encase you can’t make that one why not join us for a picnic (weather permitting) on Hilly Fields during the extended tour taking place on the 6th of May, again meeting outside the Town Hall at 12:15 but lasting till 2pm.

There is plenty going on and we encourage you to get involved and enjoy yourself, find out more information and see what other tours are being given  here.

CHAPS Men’s Health Day

Pulp Friction (our pedal powered smoothie maker) will be making an appearance at CHAPS’ annual event taking place on Thursday 28th March from 10am – 4pm at Weston Homes Community Stadium.

The event is free and aims to reacquaint men with their health, making health checks as convenient as possible by offering a quick but thorough service from medical professionals.

There will be a veteran car rally as well as around 20 stalls covering all aspects of men’s mental and physical health, including aortic aneurysm screening, heart checks, prostate cancer screening, diabetes tests, physiotherapy and sports injury detection and treatment.

Last year almost 200 men attended during the day and the event helped to prolong the lives of at least four men by identifying two life-threatening Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA) and two cases of prostate cancer.

DSG’s Bike Week ride

Neil Allen from DSG describes their bike ride….

‘To mark this years “Bike Week” staff from DSG Colchester took part in a lunch time 10 mile ride to the village of Fingringhoe and back. Described as a “pleasant poodle”, any suggestion that the event would be taken seriously disappeared with the arrival of two colleagues on an ancient tandem. Accompanied by much laughter and synchronized bellringing, hills were conquered and byways explored. So successful was the ride that it is proposed to make it a regular event!’
