CBC walking tea partyCBC walking winners

Twenty teams took part in this year’s Walking Challenge at Colchester Borough Council. Between the 11 and 15 May, 100 members of staff used pedometers to count their daily steps. Prizes for the top walking team, top walker and a free prize draw for everyone walking over 10,000 steps on any one day were up for grabs. Competition was fierce, both across the teams and within! The winners were announced over coffee and cakes.

‘The Regenerators’ were the top walking team racking up a massive 492,530 steps. A close second were the ‘Ant Hill Mob’ amassing a fantastic 450,685 steps.

CBC’s Top Walker was Marie Rutherford who walked a massive 166,979 steps throughout the week and Terry Cooper who walked a fantastic 131,148 steps.

Out of the 100 participants, the majority walked at least 10,000 steps on one of the days, with a sizable number walking over 10,000 steps on all five days. Angela Fowler won the free prize draw.

Over the course of the challenge a massive 6,822,705 steps were walked covering a total distance of 3,230 miles.

Michelle Lay-Flurrie, CBC’s CTPC rep said ‘ We have had an overwhelming response to the walking challenge this year, our best yet in terms of numbers of staff taking part. Everyone has had a great time and we are really impressed with the number of steps the teams have walked. We always get good feedback after the challenge with staff telling us how much fun it has been and how healthy they are feeling! We hope it leads to more walking generally particularly for the journey to work’

Inspired by the success of CBC’s walking and cycling challenges earlier in the year, Helen O’Halloran, a keen cyclist working within Professional Services at CBC, along with her colleague Suzanne Norton arranged a social weekend cycle ride and walk around Highwoods Country Park.

Helen said ‘It was a beautiful bright and sunny day and was lovely to see so many friendly faces coming along with their families to enjoy the weather and beautiful surroundings.’

Ten people, including four kids joined the cycle ride and fifteen  people, including eight kids and two dogs came along for the walk around the park. With a couple of chocolate stops along the way, both ride and walk finished up with a lunch and a few beverages in the local pub. Everyone agreed how nice it was to catch up with people outside of work, that  it had been a great success and something they would like to do on a regular basis..

Other dates are currently being discussed, so CBC staff, watch out for another invitation to join the PSU again soon!

DSG’s Biggest Bacon Butty stop!

Defence Support Group had a full bike shed.  Shift patterns didn’t cater for offering a bike breakfast, but ever creative, the Biggest Bacon Butty stop was part of a lunch time ride with ”Smoking Phil Puxley” on the tongs.

‘An excellent BBQ pit stop’ quoted Neil, DSG’s CTPC rep. He also added that he was very pleased that some staff who hadn’t come along to previous lunchtime rides had joined them, using DSG’s pool bikes.  ‘We ran out of pool bikes, had we had more, even more colleagues would have joined us.’

In total 20% of DSG’s Colchester workforce turned out for the ride!

CBC’s Big Bike Breakfast

Colchester Borough Council celebrated Cycle to Work day with over 50 staff cycling in to enjoy a continental breakfast at Rowan House and Shrub End depot.

Cakes were offered to the service with the  most staff cycling in, and Shrub End won, with 32 staff cycling to work, representing a big proportion of their work force!

Michelle, our CTPC rep said, ‘It was lovely to see so many people cycling in, some for the first time and the bike racks full at Rowan House and Shrub End. A particularly special thank you to two ladies who decided to leave their car at home for the first time, enjoy the dry weather and cycle in together. Both said how much they enjoyed it and that they would try it again in the future!’

4 September Cycle to Work day

Cycle to work banner

4th September is when nationally over 9000 people have already pledged to cycle in to work.

Can we help them up this number and put Colchester on the map?

It’s easy to make a pledge online, however can you get your employer to take part too?

It’s also easy for employers to support Cycle to Work day.

All they need to do is pledge their support by committing to at least one of the actions below:

1) Promote Cycle to Work day throughout their business

2) Be part of Britain’s Biggest Bike Breakfast, by rewarding colleagues that ride in on September 4 with a coffee and croissant

3) Run an event for their staff to promote the day and its aims

Pass the web link www.cycletoworkday.org to your employer and encourage them to pledge on behalf of your organisation.

If you are an employer reading this make your pledge HERE! today. There are also lots of resources on the site you can download to promote the day including posters, emails, letter heads etc.

Cycle retailers across the country have also signed up to offer Free Dr Bike MOT’s between the 25th August and 4th September.  In Colchestser Thomas’ Cycle Revolution and 53-12 have signed up to offer these checks but staff can check out local retailers where they live by clicking here  If you do take up the offer from a retailer give them a ring before hand to arrange a mutually convenient time to take your bike in.

If you or your staff want some ideas on cycle routes they can check out the route maps on the Cycle Colchester website.

If you do celebrate Cycle to Work day, please remember to take some photos and dont’ forget to share them with us at  travel.plan.club@colchester.gov.uk

Bike Week Activities

As you might be aware, this week we celebrate National Bike Week! See what some of our members- Colchester Borough Council, Defense Group Support and Essex County Council – have been up to:

Colchester Borough Council

Dr Bike at CBC 1 June 14

Staff members have been offered two free Dr Bike sessions to bring their bike along for a health check. These have proved very popular, with several bikes lined up throughout the day waiting for their turn:

Also, staff members were encouraged to team up and see who can log the most rides  over Bike Week. Six teams have entered the challenge- the winner still to be decided as the week is only half way through!

Defense Support Group

DSG staff have a delicious reason to go out on their bikes this week! Their traditional Ice Cream lunch ride, consisting of a gentle 8 miles ride to Stanway Green and back,  will coincide with Bike Week. Come back to see photos of the ride soon!

Essex County Council

ECC had 24 bikes visit Dr Bike yesterday and 68 people took part in their Bike Week breakfast. The Bike Sheds were heaving with over 80 bikes, so looks like lots of staff are cycling in this week!

Celebrating cycling this May

We have been at a couple of events this May promoting sustainable travel and particularly cycling.

Colchester Institute’s Bee Green day (8 May) was a success despite the fact it poured with rain all day! Over 60 staff and students pedaled themselves a smoothie!

Luckily the sun shone brightly for the Well Being event in Castle Park on the 17 May.  Led by CTC and supported by Cycle Colchester, Sustrans, Breeze and Re-Cycle we took up almost half the event with a huge try a bike area, information stand, Dr Bike and Re-cycle bike sales.

117 children  made themselves a Cycling, Walking or Scootering Champion id badge, and over 100 people took part in trying a bike. Lots of kids whizzed around on a range of bikes from balance bikes to our fun Circus Bike! We spoke to lots of adults about family cycling and they enjoyed trying out the trailers and child seats with their kids! Dr Bike aka Neil Allen, was busy all day doing free bike MOT’s and Recycle made £700 to help send more bikes to Africa through their bike sales. All in all it was a fun and successful day!
