Treasure to be found in High Woods County Park

trail logo

On July 31st, 10:30am outside High Woods Visitor Centre, Cycle Colchester will be revealing a closely guarded secret, the fact it is in the possession of a treasure map. This map along with a series of questions leads to the location of a hidden roman treasure.

Cycle Colchester has been working hard to produce a Roman themed treasure trail that can be walked or cycled and highlights the ease at which High Woods County Park can be accessed and explored by bicycle.

In partnership with CTC the trail is being launched as part of Love Parks Week at High Woods County Park on the 31st of July. The event is free to take part in and everyone is welcomed to come and join in, treasure map packs will be handed out from 10:30 am till 2pm. As there is a physical treasure at the end of the trail containing a variety of goodies, the quicker you find it the more treasure you are able to choose from. We ask that treasure seekers feel free to take a reward from the treasure, but why not also add to it, by putting something back into the treasure it will ensure that it will be there for treasure seekers to find for years to come.

In addition to the treasure trail, Richard Monk from CTC will be leading lead rides around the park, the first starting at 11:30, and will also be offering free cycle hire for the day in order for you to enjoy both or either activity. Cycle Colchester will also be on hand giving out general cycle advice to get you on your bike this summer.

Pledge to walk for the chance to win £100 worth of shoe vouchers

Amelia_legs

Perfect Purdy over at LoveUrCarColchester is getting people out of their cars and on to their feet and is offering you the chance to win £100 worth of shoe vouchers. All you need to do is pledge to walk for short trips rather than taking the car.

Walking for short journeys is not only better for the environment and your health but is also better for the car. Short journeys don’t give the engine or catalytic convertor time to reach their operating temperature and efficiency, meaning more wear and tear.

So if you love your car and love Colchester, give your car a rest and join Purdy. What pledge will you make to change at least one of your short car trips for your feet instead?

Make your pledge between Monday 22 April and Friday 31 May to be entered into the prize draw. The winner will be drawn on Monday 3 June.

Jane’s Walk 2013

 CTPC Jane's Walk Poster

National walking month kicks off in Colchester with the world famous Jane’s Walks and the sun has even come out to join us!

Jane’s Walk celebrates the ideas and legacy of urbanist Jane Jacobs by getting local people showing off their local area through a series of free led walks. This international event happens every year at the start of May and its back in Colchester for the 3rd year running.

There are many guided walks planned for the Bank Holiday weekend of the 3rd to the 6th of May with plenty of local people getting involved there is something for everyone, CTPC and the University of Essex are even hosting some walks.

Join Kate Dunton with her short lunch time walk around the beautiful campus of the University of Essex and learn of its tales, urban myths and history. The walk starts outside the Lakeside Café at 1pm on the 3rd of May and lasts one hour.

We ourselves are leading two lunch time tours exploring Colchester’s transport history where we rediscover the forgotten tramlines that still lay beneath the surface of our town! The first, starting outside the Town Hall, takes place on the 3rd of May, from 12:15 till 1pm. But encase you can’t make that one why not join us for a picnic (weather permitting) on Hilly Fields during the extended tour taking place on the 6th of May, again meeting outside the Town Hall at 12:15 but lasting till 2pm.

There is plenty going on and we encourage you to get involved and enjoy yourself, find out more information and see what other tours are being given  here.

25 March highlights

CBC Walking Map-06.04.10-67

Fingers crossed the weather is going to improve  in time for our spring promotions.  This isn’t a photo from this year!

If you didn’t make it to the recent CTPC meeting, here are the highlights.

May is walking month and kicks off with the internationally renowned Jane’s Walk, more in a blog from David coming soon. For the first time the CTPC will be running its own walk, so please join us. Please share the full programme with your colleagues and encourage them to come along.

Loveurcarcolchester launches it’s ‘Short Trip – Take the Pavement’ campaign in May, you may see billboards around town. There is a £100 shoe voucher prize draw for anyone pledging to swap one of their short car journeys for their feet instead.

Walk to Work week is 13 – 17th May and the University, ECC and CBC will be holding their own walking challenges.

Check out the link, if you want a free fun walking online challenge to get your workmates competing.

On the cycling front the CTPC is planning to develop a local online Bike Challenge this year using funding obtained from ECC last year. Collaboration with the University on this project is being explored.

Cycle Colchester e-newsletters, put together by the CTPC  have been revamped to include much more including infrastructure developments, monthly profile on a local cyclist, useful information, educational content as well as local events.  We will send CTPC members future e-newsletters which we hope you can share with colleagues.

We still have funding to run some cycle confidence training sessions, so if you would like to do some but can’t fund it yourself, get in touch.

A ‘See Me’ campaign is planned for autumn.

We promote cycling all year round but if you want to focus on one specific week, make it Bike Week, June 15 – 23.

Buses! We haven’t done much to promote buses in recent years, we want to do more this year but first we feel we need to get more in touch with how existing bus users find the services they use.

We are putting together a bus users survey to get feedback. If you would like to send it to your bus users and we haven’t yet been in touch, please get in contact.

Results will be used to establish a better dialogue with the bus operators and to tailor our marketing approach.

Survey results and ECC accreditation Several of our members took part in our two yearly travel survey last year. We are still doing the write up, but response rates were significantly higher than in previous years and results were positive. Congratulations to seven of our members, who have gained Essex County Council business Travel Plan accreditation this year. A blog specifically on the survey results and accreditation will be coming soon.

New ideas to pursue Finally, we discussed developing an online sustainable travel challenge which wasn’t just confined to cycling that could be used by CTPC members to encourage travel change. We will be looking for funding sources to pursue this, but will also see how it could be integrated on the back of the Cycle Challenge.

We nearly walked Lands End to John o’Groats!

Walking week 14 – 18 May and Colchester logged 834 miles, saved 144kg of carbon and burned the equivalent of 148 muffins using the Living Streets online challenge!!

We missed making it from Land’s End to John o’Groats by only 39 miles!

The Living Streets website was fun to use and the league tables made for hot competition. It was just a pity the site was so slow to sign up to and add walks.  We will  be feeding back to Living Streets, so let us know if you have anything to add.

In the meantime summer seems to have appeared so keep up the good walks!
