Building Resilient Communities event

If you didn’t manage to get to Colchester Borough Council’s (CBC) Building Resilient Communities event last month, you might be interested in some of the presentations, which are now all available on the CBC website.

Of particular interest to CTPC members – was a very illuminating presentation on dispelling the myths about electric vehicles. Amongst the wealth of useful information included was the large number of electric charge points across the country, the range of electric vehicles versus the daily distance the average person in the UK travels, the savings and business benefits.

The presentation did particularly focus on the Nissan Leaf – however this does appear to be the market leader in electric cars and we were impressed with it’s other green credentials including how much of the car is made from recycled materials and that 99% of the car can actually be recycling.

So if you want to know more about electric cars  and see the other presentations visit the Building Resilient Communities webpage

Other presentations that could be useful to CTPC SME’s were a couple of funding opportunities for sustainable projects (though not travel related) offered through LoCASE and The Carbon Trust Green Business fund.

Inspired by the success of CBC’s walking and cycling challenges earlier in the year, Helen O’Halloran, a keen cyclist working within Professional Services at CBC, along with her colleague Suzanne Norton arranged a social weekend cycle ride and walk around Highwoods Country Park.

Helen said ‘It was a beautiful bright and sunny day and was lovely to see so many friendly faces coming along with their families to enjoy the weather and beautiful surroundings.’

Ten people, including four kids joined the cycle ride and fifteen  people, including eight kids and two dogs came along for the walk around the park. With a couple of chocolate stops along the way, both ride and walk finished up with a lunch and a few beverages in the local pub. Everyone agreed how nice it was to catch up with people outside of work, that  it had been a great success and something they would like to do on a regular basis..

Other dates are currently being discussed, so CBC staff, watch out for another invitation to join the PSU again soon!

Have any of your sustainable travel promotions at work, inspired colleagues to organise their own events? Let us have your stories!

An exciting start to 2013

Now January and the Christmas period is well and truly out of the way, we are planning ahead for 2013.

Another grant has been successfully won from Defra to continue our Loveurcarcolchester work. We are developing a programme of billboards which will span a year. This will kick off in late April with a focus on encouraging walking for short journeys. This will tie in nicely with Travel Plan Club promotions for Walking Week during May.

A successful meeting with everyone involved with Cycle Colchester promotional events and  training took place last week with a way forward decided on for example the website and directing queries for cycle training.  An opportunity to bid for small grants from ECC to promote cycling is available this year. We hope to develop our own Bike Challenge, as this was a project that we had funding for last year but were unable to take foward.

We are working closely with Chuft. Claudia and David are working up a Car Share Coffee Club, The Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round and a Tea Time Travel Talk event.

We are working on Pool Bike promotions with CBC and David has just revamped CBC’s flexible travel section on their intranet.

Colchester Institute want to promote their car share scheme,  so we are looking at how we can help them do that.

We will be contacting our other members soon to find out how we can help this year. But if you already know what you want to do,  get in touch!
