Free parking for car sharers at Colchester Station

Do you travel by train for business meetings?

Why not travel with colleagues and make the most of the work time you have on the train that you would lose if you travelled by car?

Plus if you car share to the station you can ENJOY UP TO 8 HOURS FREE PARKING at Colchester Station.

The LoveurcarColchester car share bays are located on the south side of the station and anybody car sharing to the station for business or personal use can use them free of charge. You need a Loveurcar car share permit which you can also get for free by applying online.

The Loveurcar car share permit can also be used in a number of car parks in town including St Mary’s, Vineyard Street, Britannia and St Johns where the car share bays are located in preferential locations. (Please note normal car park charges still apply in the town centre car parks)

Car sharers can save money on fuel and car park charges by taking it in turns to give lifts or by reimbursing their car share drivers with a contribution towards fuel and parking costs.

There are added community benefits if more people car share. Car sharing contributes to reducing the number of cars on the roads, improvements in air quality through fewer cars, with the knock on effect of reducing traffic congestion.

If you workplace doesn’t already have a car share matching scheme, then suggest they set one up. You may be surprised to find how many colleagues live close to each other and could potentially car share some of the days of the week.  You can find out more about car sharing including local online car share matching schemes below.

Preferential parking for Colchester car sharers

loveyrcar

LoveurCarColchester has just launched their latest project to encourage car sharing into the town centre

Starting this month, you can benefit from dedicated car sharing bays in preferential locations in five town centre car parks. These are in St. Marys, St. Johns, Priory Street, Britannia and Vineyard Street car parks.

You can’t miss the colourful bays, as they are painted green with a red outline. They will soon also have a heart with 2+ in the middle! There are also signs near the bays explaining what they are all about and they are all located close to the entrance of each car park.

As you know, car sharing is a great way to save fuel, reduce congestion and drive in a greener way.

All you need to do to sign up to use the bays is to go to our LUC Car Share Permit page, fill in the form, and we will post you a FREE permit. It’s all very straightforward, so take advantage of this scheme and start car sharing today!

You will still need to pay normal parking fees or display your season ticket, but remember you could be sharing your parking and fuel costs with your car share partner/s. For tips on setting up a car share check out the LoveurCarColchester website.

National Lift Share Week 6-10 October

Faxi

The 6 – 10 October is National Lift share week and a great opportunity to promote car sharing.

There are lots of good reasons to promote car sharing to your organisation including reducing pressure on your car parks, and relieving local traffic congestion.

There are plenty of benefits for those that choose to car share including the opportunity to save money on fuel and parking costs, reducing the stress of driving in and finding a parking space more easily.

Here are a few ideas for how you could promote Lift share week to your colleagues.

FAXI –   We have purchased 10 groups for this new map based social network that allows you to identify journey sharing partners by seeing on a map who lives nearby or en route to one specific destination or workplace. You can then message them without giving away personal information. There is an apple and android ap to go with it. If you want to take advantage of one of our groups, get in touch to find out more.

Essex Car Share –  If you don’t want your own workplace group you could promote ECC’s lift share matching site and encourage your colleagues to sign up.

Loveurcarcolchester –  Share our quirky film featuring Baz and Purdy’s journey to regular car sharing to illustrate the benefits of car sharing in a different way. The web page also includes advice about car sharing on subjects such as insurance and charging.

If you have dedicated car share bays, now’s the time to remind everyone of your car sharing scheme and the benefits.

If you don’t have any dedicated car share bays, could you introduce some during Lift share week?

On the promotional side, what about holding a post code coffee and cake morning where members of staff who would like to car share can meet up and see if anyone else is living near them and could share lifts?

Or could you hold some sort of competition/prize draw for everyone who tries a car share journey during lift share week?

Email travel.plan.club@colchester.gov.uk if you want to discuss ideas or have help with your plans. Please let us know how your promotions go so we can post about it!

Pledge to walk for the chance to win £100 worth of shoe vouchers

Amelia_legs

Perfect Purdy over at LoveUrCarColchester is getting people out of their cars and on to their feet and is offering you the chance to win £100 worth of shoe vouchers. All you need to do is pledge to walk for short trips rather than taking the car.

Walking for short journeys is not only better for the environment and your health but is also better for the car. Short journeys don’t give the engine or catalytic convertor time to reach their operating temperature and efficiency, meaning more wear and tear.

So if you love your car and love Colchester, give your car a rest and join Purdy. What pledge will you make to change at least one of your short car trips for your feet instead?

Make your pledge between Monday 22 April and Friday 31 May to be entered into the prize draw. The winner will be drawn on Monday 3 June.

Belated CTPC write up

Re-cycle inundated with customers at freshers fair.

A much belated write up about the last Travel Plan Club meeting held at the University on the 6 September.

The CTPC has been very busy particularly helping the University and Colchester Institute with their freshers fairs plus undertaking lots of travel surveys for our various members.

Things have moved on since the meeting, so just a quick recap and update on a few key points…

Replacing Andrew: Claudia started today and David will start next week! We have successfully recruited two interns who will work  with us until March 2013.  We look forward to working with them and will introduce them to you soon.

Key projects:

ECC accreditation:

We are keen to help our members achieve ECC accreditation.  Several of you are aiming for silver and a couple for gold. The main challenge is the survey response rate, so this year surveys will be bespoke to each organisation as a new approach to encourage more participation.  The deadline for completing surveys was this week, and Colchester Institute, CHUFT and CBC’s are complete with the Uni’s ending this week. More on survey results in a future blog!

Cycling Promotion:

Emily is now a trained ride leader so could lead rides from your organisation if this is something you want to set up.

£300 funding is available for a See Me campaign, highlighting the need and legal requirement to use lights at night and to wear high viz clothing. Due to  resource constraints this has only been pursued at the Uni this year with two very successful ‘See Me’ twilight rides.  Let’s put this in the programme for next year and do something Travel Plan Club wide.

We also still have £2k funding for our own in house Cycle Challenge, Charlotte thinks the Uni might be able to help with this project – perhaps as a student project.. one to pursue for next spring.

Cycle Colchester E- Newsletters are going out each month, the aim is to show that cycling isn’t just for summer and that activities take place throughout the year.

Loveurcarcolchester

There is still funding for CTPC bespoke promotions. Events have already taken place at the University where we promoted their car share scheme and used an eco driving simulator to raise awareness of fuel efficient driving, we did the same at CHUFT, however there we were launching their new car share scheme offering dedicated parking bays.  We aim to hold events in seven different organisations – so what can we do for you to promote car sharing and fuel efficient driving?

The Autumn campaign starts soon, and will highlight how Purdy’s savings have paid for her Christmas shop. We need the CTPC’s support to promote this campaign.

Forward planning/promotional events

We want to help you with anything you would like to promote over the coming months. Public Transport is one area that we haven’t promoted heavily. Please give us your ideas.

We are sponsoring the Active and Sustainable Travel NQE business awards this year, thanks to those members who have entered and good luck.

The temporary bus station in Queen Street will be closing on 17 November 2012 and the new bus station in Osborne Street opening 18 November. CBC will provide us with information shortly that we can share with our organisations.

We haven’t yet set a date for the next meeting but will do soon. It will probably be in January 2013.

Loveurcarcolchester

And now for something completely different. Our keen followers may have heard rumblings about an exciting new project, working on new themes in very different ways. And we can’t keep our secret any longer. Coming to you, and the whole of Colchester, next week, is the LOVEURCARCOLCHESTER project.

At Loveurcarcolchester we recognise that car use is very important in Colchester, and that for many local trips we need to use our cars.
So how do we make our town a better place by playing our part in reducing traffic congestion, as we all accept that it’s sometimes a problem?
Loveurcarcolchester is here to have fun, and support transport change.
We’re here to celebrate what’s good about local driving, and also to encourage smarter driving, looking at car sharing, fuel economy and much more……
And, maybe sometimes, we can try something else?

Thank you to government department Defra for supporting this project in Colchester. The project partners are the Colchester Borough Council Air Quality team, Colchester Travel Plan Club, and local mediamakers and style gurus V102.

So what can we expect? Get ready to meet Bald Baz, Perfect Purdy, Frankie Two-Toes and Bob Noxious, our video heroes. From next week, visit our website www.loveurcarcolchester.co.uk and maybe win an i-Pad2.

What’s coming up?

5 - 19 May Colchester Walking Challenge

10 - 25 June Colchester Cycle Challenge

(10 - 17 June National Bike Week)
