MP and Mayor cycle too!

Will Quince on Pulp Friction1Mayor on bicycle 2015

Cycle Colchester persuaded new MP Will Quince to try out their pedal powered smoothie maker at the Street Wise festival on the 13 June.

They took the opportunity to talk to him about local cycling and he confirmed his wish to sort out Colchester’s infrastructure to help cyclists as well as bus users.

New Mayor Cllr Theresa Higgins has been seen out and about on her bike. Cycle Colchester interviewed her this month and she said, cycling is her preferred mode of transport for travelling to civic occasions, it’s often quicker, and cheaper than using the official car, so makes savings for the mayoral budget.

Bee Green!

Cycle user group bBee Green event 19 May 15Bee Green event 2- 19 May 15

Colchester Institute hosted it’s second Bee Green event yesterday to highlight the importance of sustainability to it’s students, staff and the public. As well as having Colchester Bee Keeping Association with them for the day highlighting the vital contribution bees make to sustainable agriculture and the environment, there was also the opportunity to take part in lots of activities.

Free bike repairs, local stalls, a farmers market, a boot camp, electric cars, walking tours, free NHS checks, fabulous food cooked by Colchester Institute’s chefs were just some of the many other attractions.

Rhonda, Colchester Institute’s CTPC rep led a lunchtime walk around the town, including a picnic on route with free water and sandwiches. Eight members of staff took part. Rhonda said ‘I am really pleased with how the walk went and I hope to make it a more regular activity’

The Colchester Institute’s bike user group offered Dr Bike health checks, checking around 20 bikes over the course of the day. Students and staff could also test their stamina, to see how far they could cycle in three minutes on a stationary bike!

Pulp Friction was there, getting many students and staff back on a bike for a chance to pedal themselves a free smoothie!

The weather held out, but at 2:30 a sudden hail storm descended with pebble sized ice as a dramatic grand finale to a good day!

CHAPS Men’s Health Day

Pulp Friction (our pedal powered smoothie maker) will be making an appearance at CHAPS’ annual event taking place on Thursday 28th March from 10am – 4pm at Weston Homes Community Stadium.

The event is free and aims to reacquaint men with their health, making health checks as convenient as possible by offering a quick but thorough service from medical professionals.

There will be a veteran car rally as well as around 20 stalls covering all aspects of men’s mental and physical health, including aortic aneurysm screening, heart checks, prostate cancer screening, diabetes tests, physiotherapy and sports injury detection and treatment.

Last year almost 200 men attended during the day and the event helped to prolong the lives of at least four men by identifying two life-threatening Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA) and two cases of prostate cancer.

If you have an event coming up and you would like an appearance from Pulp Friction why not get in touch?

Pulp Friction joins giant inflatables!

It was a gloriously sunny day on Wednesday for Colchester Institute’s Freshers’ Fair.

Luckily for us we found a shady spot to set ourselves up, having transported the smoothie maker plus all the fruit to the event in a bike trailer!  Pulp Friction joined an array of strange and energy demanding inflatable fun things and offered a welcome  break and much needed energy boost for weary and hot students fresh from their surfing, bumper cars and this other thing – which I couldn’t quite work out, but having done some googling have discovered was an inflatable laser quest – picture above!

There were plenty of students prepared to pedal for their smoothies, but plenty also that were happy for someone else to pedal one for them! Pulp Friction got a good thrashing from some of the more enthusiastic lads and at times had to be held down to stop the whole bike and turbo trainer from taking off – some serious rubber was burnt!

180 smoothies were made and we ran out of fruit at around 3.  We attempted to do a short travel survey and managed to pin down 84 students, who completed the survey with varying degrees of attention, so the results are a little random! We did at least get how they travelled to campus,  and the top three ways to travel were bus at 42%, train at 20% and walk at 19%.

So Colchester Institute Freshers’ fair is over and we are due to be at the University of Essex’s Freshers’ Fair on Saturday 8th October – sadly we will not have Pulp Friction with us, as she is already booked, but it does mean we will have some time to actually talk to the students!

What’s coming up?

5 - 19 May Colchester Walking Challenge

10 - 25 June Colchester Cycle Challenge

(10 - 17 June National Bike Week)

14 June CTPC members meeting

15 June National Clean Air Day
